Pig poop, shin-deep, no joke!

Pig
These poor villagers can say "it's getting deep around here" and really mean it!

From the BBC News, we hear about a German village which had a tank containing 52,800 gallons of pig manure burst, sending the stinking sludge flowing into the town. At some points it was a foot and a half deep.

I hope you're not reading this right before lunch ;)

Glow in the dark pigs?
How weird is this? Some Taiwanese researchers have created a few glow-in-the-dark pigs by adding genetic material from jellyfish. It sounds like they're planning to put the concept to good use, rather than just make it a circus-style freak-show, but it's still pretty weird. ...

Steam powered turbine radio control tank
Looking like something out of the Wild Wild West (preferably the original series!) this homebuilt radio controlled tank is powered by a steam turbine. Video inside. Something about steam power is intriguing. It's not exactly mystical in any way, yet it holds a certain charm. When I was a kid, I always thought it would be cool to have one of those little steam-powered engines that sits on your desk and burns tiny blocks of wood. Well, take that simple steam engine and multiply it times 100 and you get this radio-controlled steam tank. There is a butane/propane...

Gumstix - pre-built microcontrollers with many options
These microcontroller boards have options for wireless ethernet, wired ethernet, USB, and other goodies for semi-reasonable prices (as far as embedding in projects). I've never seen these Gumstix boards before, but they do look interesting. I typically use Microchip PIC microcontrollers for my projects because they are very small and most importantly, CHEAP. I once bought a BS2 (Basic Stamp 2) which was $50 and I had many dreams of doing cool things with it -- that was, until I realized that I'd be having to embed a $50 part into my silly blinking LED project! ;) Thus, I taught...

micsaund.com is about to go live!
It's been a VERY long time in the making, but after over a year of paying for hosting (but not doing anything with it), I'm about to put micsaund.com online! www.micsaund.com will be the entry-point with a blog discussing things such as pinball, arcade video games, computer games, building electronic project, technology news, etc. I've wanted a "general purpose" posting area for quite a while and it just did not fit-in with my dedicated Indiana Jones pinball site on Geocities (not to mention, they only gave me static HTML). Which brings me to the actual pinball news! You will find...

Video of the Mantis shrimp in a one cubic foot micro-reef
Continuing on a similar thread from my recent Mantis shrimp post, here is a video of a Mantis shrimp, which is cool enough, but also living in a super-small 1 cubic foot tank micro reef. Chad Rausch has built what probably the smallest micro reef ever. It's only one cubic foot of salt-water and contains live corals and one of the aquarium-cracking ;) Mantis shrimp I mentioned in a previous post. He even filmed a video showing it in action. Salt-water aquariums are known to be somewhat difficult to keep due to chemistry issues, and the larger the tank the...
