Good example of creativity at Microsoft

by @ 3:03 pm. Filed under Fun Stuff, Retro Computing

Bill Gates of Microsoft as a young kid
If you've ever wondered why nobody looks to Microsoft for creativity or "cool" this video will explain why.

It's no secret that Microsoft isn't "cool" especially when compared to certain other companies like Apple or Oracle. They have a reputation for being nerdy and/or button-down shirt types who nobody will admit to idolizing or wanting to be like. Well, except for the main characters in Revenge of the Nerds.

Here is a video showing a glimpse of that MS creativity. They made a rap music video to promote the then-new upgrade to MS-DOS 5.0 with its GUI (if you could call it that). Now you can see why Microsoft focuses on business utilities and tries to avoid anything creative.

Arcade games emulated in a scratch-off card
I had totally forgotten about these, but the second I saw it, it all came rushing back. I remember getting these scratch-off "video games" from places like McDonald's when I was a kid in the 80s. Nothing can demonstrate the extreme interest in video games during the "gold years" (1980s) like the spin-off toys, gadgets, and inventions that were created at the time. There were dozens of handheld battery-powered games, stuffed toys, action figures, comic books, and much, much more -- all based on the hot games of the time such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, and others. Well, one...

Amazing MIT computerized whiteboard simulation system
This video demonstrates a new system that combines computers, a projector, and special "pens" to create an intellectual sandbox. Being a drone in a corporate environment, when I first saw this video, I imagined how cool it would be to have an electronic whiteboard like that. From a nerd perspective, it's just a pretty cool use of a projects and fancy input system to duplicate the functionality of the time-tested pen and drawing surface that costs 1/1000th as much. However, several seconds into the video, you see that the MIT system is much more than just a fancy whiteboard. The...

Retro style nixie-tube clock powered by a 6502 microprocessor
Combining the orange glow of nixie tubes with an old-style microprocessor leads to this neat clock. The 6502 stands tall in many a nerd's memory. It powered the venerable Commodore 64, the Apple II, and countless other personal computers and gadgets from the wonder years of computing. It's not often used these days due to the fact that many microcontrollers are easier to develop with and offer equal or better power. However, in a nod towards the good ole' days, Ryan Brooks has combined the retro 6502 microprocessor with an even older technology: nixie tubes. Nixie tubes are a remnant from...

Oil companies are simply passing-on the costs. Yeah right.
Exxon is passing the costs right into their company cash coffers as they prepare to surpass the mighty Microsoft as the most cash-laden US company. The oil companies are constantly turning their pockets inside-out in order to appear sympathetic with consumers, all the while proclaiming that they do not make money from the increased prices and merely pass the costs on. If that's true, why is Exxon about to surpass Microsoft, the most cash-rich non-financial company for the past many years or possibly longer? It's no secret that Microsoft basically prints money with software and has used questionable market tactics to...

$20 Commodore 64 toy that can be modified for so much more
Radio Shack sells a $20 joystick toy that plays video games on your TV and it contains a full C-64 on-a-chip which you can hack. A kind reader shared a link (thanks David!) to a site with information on a $20 Radio Shack toy which has a nice little surprise inside: it's a full-blown Commodore 64 reduced to a single chip. Better yet, it's the infamous chip which was designed by Jeri Ellsworth and is considered to be probably the best implementation available. The chip offers several benefits over the original C64 such as Svideo output and additional...
